Debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

Democratic nominee has strong support among black, Latino and female voters

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has a 24 point lead over Republican rival Donald Trump among likely voters in their home state of New York, according to a Wall Street Journal-NBC 4 New York-Marist poll released Monday.
The poll, which came out hours before Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump are scheduled to face off in their first debate at Hofstra University on Long Island, showed Mrs. Clinton leads Mr. Trump 57% to 33% among likely voters statewide. The poll found 8% don’t support either candidate and 2% are undecided.
Mrs. Clinton, who represented New York in the U.S. Senate for eight years before she joined President Barack Obama ’s administration as secretary as state, leads by large margins among black, Latino and female voters. She also beats Mr. Trump among men.
Mr. Trump, who was born in New York City, has said he would be competitive in the state, but New York has long been considered a sure win for Mrs. Clinton. In April, both Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton won their respective primaries here in New York.
“The Empire State is far from a battleground state,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.
“What makes New York different is the Democratic registration advantage and her ability to best Trump among white voters and men in the state,” Mr. Miringoff said.
Mrs. Clinton wins 89% of black voters, 65% of Latino voters and 49% of white voters, according to the poll, while Mr. Trump wins 5% of black voters, 30% of Latino voters and 41% of white voters.
Mrs. Clinton leads Mr. Trump 65% to 26% among women, according to the poll, and 48% to 41% among men. Mr. Trump leads Mrs. Clinton among white men who are likely to cast a ballot, 48% to 40%. Mr. Trump also leads among white voters without a college education, 50% to 40%.

Some 68% of New Yorkers have an unfavorable opinion of Mr. Trump, according to the poll, while 47% have an unfavorable opinion of Mrs. Clinton.
While New York voters voiced interest in Monday night’s debate, two-thirds said the debate will have little to no effect on their vote in the Nov. 8 election.
